Hiding behind the reputation she’s earned, Scarlett refuses to let Kian into her world. She’s not going to add one more conquest to her tarnished past, but this guy seems different. He treats her differently. And as they spend more and more time together, it becomes impossible for both to deny the pull.
Both characters struggle to live up to their father’s expectations. This creates a bond as their diverse backstories neatly intertwine into mutual understanding and support.
What was unique about this book is the raw honesty of the two polar-opposite protagonists. The insecurities made them real and likable. Especially Scarlett, with her loose reputation and father in prison. Often, young leading ladies are created as squeaky-clean. Hardly Scarlet. Still, she’s fiercely loyal, has a good heart, and is very smart. Those characteristics she dismisses too easily, in my opinion, falling in line with what others expect of her: “a good time.” But Kian sees those in her.
I love how they both prioritize inner beauty first. Nice. Refreshing. Despite the physical pull, the slow burn comes from what they learn about one another.
