Genre Inspired Self-Care

Guest Post by Tiombe Huggins

You can learn so much from books. You’ll learn about history, dive into stories that keep you up all night, or lean into the emotions of what it feels like to be a newly engaged couple. The list can go on, but have you considered that your favorite book could be the catalyst for starting your self-care journey?

Well, you’re in luck, because you can discover what self-care acts are perfectly aligned for you, based on your preferred book genre.

But first, what actually is self-care? Self-care is the intentional act of attending to your needs, which can aid in improving your overall well-being. It can include exercising, engaging in creative pursuits, or practicing mindfulness. So let’s find out what your favorite book genre tells you about your ideal self-care ritual.

Fantasy. If you’re a lover of fantasy novels, you love the magical and supernatural twist these books have. The idea of running off to an extraordinary land is exciting, so why not escape the typical shower and create some excitement with a relaxing and visually appealing bath? Create a magical place right in your bathtub by using a sparkly bubble bar and a sweet-smelling bath bomb that turns the water into a beautiful ombre of blue and purple. Creating a magical moment right in your house doesn’t stop with just your bath; consider jamming to some good tunes or redecorating your space to express your creativity.

Science Fiction. Typically, science fiction is set in a futuristic environment. And yes, we are currently in the present, but that does not mean you don’t consider what your future self does or likes. So, try out a new skill or explore a new hobby! If you have been wanting to learn how to make your own pasta, consider signing up for a cooking class. If you’re going to learn a new language, dedicate the time. Speaking of learning a new language, put that skill to the test and travel somewhere new. It might not be as exhilarating as space travel, but you can learn new things and continue to expand your mind. Your future self will definitely appreciate it.

Mystery. Oh, don’t we love a good “who done it?” A mystery novel will have you using all your critical thinking skills, piecing together clues and trying to solve it before it’s revealed. And if you enjoy that, you may find comfort in putting together a puzzle or watching a crime and mystery television show. So, make a night out of it! Grab a loved one and a 200-piece puzzle and try to solve it. When it’s all done, enjoy your favorite beverage while watching a crime show that keeps both of you on edge.

Thrillers. Thrillers thrive on creating suspense and tension. They typically include the element of a race against time. Those who love thrillers can benefit from a social and interactive game. The idea of a game generates anticipation because there will be a winner at the end, and it plays into a race against time, as it ultimately becomes a competition to see who can outdo the others and win. The game can be as simple as your classic Monopoly or something more extensive, such as an escape room. Let the game create some tension, but it should mostly be fun.

Romance. Moving on to romance, which usually involves love stories and romantic relationships. If you love a romance novel, consider creating your own love story where you are the main character and shower yourself with all the love you deserve. Take yourself on a solo date, whether to a Broadway play or that new restaurant you’ve been dying to try. My favorite is creating a floral arrangement. Stop by your local supermarket and pick up some flowers that you adore, and create something beautiful. Romance is not exclusively tied to a romantic interest.  Romanize your current situation and be smitten with yourself.

Horror. Raise your hand if you enjoy something that makes your heartbeat faster. Horror books are made to frighten or disturb the reader, but the feeling can be exhilarating. If this is you, head to your local amusement park now, because the roller coasters are waiting for you. They might appear to be something kids do, but adults who love a thrill can also benefit from this. It can relieve some stress and put a smile on your face. But if heights aren’t your thing, try some foods or snacks that your palate is not accustomed to.

Historical Fiction. Historical fiction involves stories set in historical periods. These stories can include historical figures and events. You might not be able to go back to that time, but you can visit historical landmarks or take a trip to the museum to see some artifacts in person. Self-care may involve visiting these places to get a sense of the time period and the significance that will ultimately warm your heart. Still, self-care can also be as simple as taking a pen and paper and writing about how you might feel if you were living during that time. What would you be wearing? Where would you be working? How would your life look? Using writing to transport you back into that time can be a great way to end your night.
