Hey Author, Who Are You?

Why Sharing Your Story Matters in Manuscript Submissions

All too often, a sad story unfolds. Literary agents must say “no” to a manuscript submission because they don’t know anything about the author.

Hey authors, it’s a red flag when you fail to respond to the “about the author” request.

Just as frustrating is a response of a few words. Literary agents don’t care if you don’t have a social media presence or a wealth of experience in the writing world. They care about your story and you.

Who are you?

What do you do for a living?

Why did you write this book?

Why do you want to be an author?

What are your social media handles and website?

Couple these answers with relevant information about any writing experience, self-published books, platform, etc. At the very least, include a brief “book jacket” write-up with where you live, what you like to do, family, pets, social media links, or anything that a reader (and agent) would find compelling.

This is not the time to be coy, shy, circumspect, arrogant, snarky, or invisible.

Literary agents and publishers need to know who is behind the story. And one line doesn’t cut it. Neither does a twelve-page biography. Find your happy medium.

Look at the websites and book jackets of authors you admire for inspiration. It’s okay if you don’t have a massive author resume or any related writing experience. But you do have a life. So succinctly yet engagingly share your story in a way that excites the reader and agent about who you are, what you’re passionate about, and why you’re writing this book.

Remember, it’s not all about the manuscript; it’s also about the author!

I hope this article gave you a few useful ideas. I would be honored if you shared it on social media. Speaking of sharing, please share your ideas and experiences below. Together, we can build an uplifting community that uplifts each other’s happiness, well-being, creativity, and success.
