How to Be a Rich Old Lady

Your guide to early investing, building wealth, and creating the wild, beautiful life you want.

The title alone is enough to pique your interest, but the first few paragraphs of this book by Amanda Holden will hook you in for the journey.

I’ve read many books on financial planning and management, but, as the author implies, they are dull, sometimes confusing, and often geared toward men. This book is entirely different. Easy to read and understand. What is incredibly refreshing and vastly unique is that it’s catered to women and funny as all get out. Even if you extracted the finance content (which is, of course, the crux of the book), you’d love her wit, wisdom, and laugh-out-loud stories.

The book’s content is well-organized, starting with financial basics and progressing to retirement planning. All the important topics are covered in frank, understandable language—but not condescending. Even if you’re already sitting on a nest egg, there is something in here for you.

The spot-on observations are almost scary. It’s like Amanda’s getting into your head and saying, “Yeah, girl, I know that misstep because I made it too. So let me help!”

She shares research and statistics on the knowledge gap in this area, often because the information is overwhelming. There are also many current concepts thoughtfully explained, such as beauty capitalism, zero-based budgeting, and consumption validation. Armed with that knowledge, she offers an easy-to-follow plan to help readers lay a smart foundation, build simple wealth habits, and adopt strategies to become a Rich Old Lady.

For example, when it comes to budgeting and saving for a rainy day, she is very thoughtful in showing how this can be done mindfully, without turning you into a scrimper devoid of fun. Hey, I’m not a shopaholic, but sometimes I fall into the trap of thinking this or that will make my life easier. We all do this. She offers a few tricks to help shift your mindset when you really need something, which can quickly turn into a slippery slope.

This is frankly a must-read book for everyone.

Other than the experts, who couldn’t learn more about financial management and be entertained while you’re doing so. It’s like going to a comedy club to void a speeding ticket (yes, that’s a thing) or taking your medicine with a spoonful of sugar.
