Lesedi’s Little Light

This children’s picture book, written by Bakang Tshegofatso Akoonyatse and illustrated by Malachy Nwabuzor, tells the story of a young girl, Lesedi, who brought light into the world at birth. After the deluge of rain on the day she was born, the sun broke through, bringing light to her mother and grandmother. As the only child, she was naturally doted on, but not spoiled.

Lesedi honors and cherishes her small family, bringing sunshine to those around her.

When her mother grew ill, all Lesedi wanted was to share her light and strength with her mama, but she couldn’t. This change in dynamics dimmed her light, and the rain and thunder that followed heralded bad news. The story doesn’t end there. There’s an uplifting ending to a tale of love, loss, grief, and learning how to find a way back to the light.

This is a beautifully illustrated book and a gentle telling of a personal loss. A perfect way to introduce, or share, a story to young children about death and grieving. However, at the same time, the author offers hope in the final pages, encouraging readers to hold onto traditions that bring loved ones close again, even after they’ve passed.

I highly recommend adding this book to your home library.
