Mexico Mutts

A Rancho Feliz charity founded on the love of books and pets.

In Agua Prieta, Mexico, thousands of stray and abandoned dogs struggle every day because of overpopulation, limited veterinary care, and low adoption rates. This is exactly why Kim Kroger Woodhouse, a compassionate philanthropist, volunteer, and friend of Rancho Feliz founders Gil and Izzy Gillenwater, stepped in to confront this crisis. Through their charity, Rancho Feliz, they’ve built two no-kill shelters that provide full-service veterinary care and a pathway to adoption. Since the inception of Mexico Mutts, volunteers and staff have provided care, protection, and second chances for these precious souls.

“Together, we help approximately 200 dogs each month — often those arriving injured, sick, or abused — in a region with the highest number of stray dogs in Latin America.”

In keeping with their mission to provide the best care to those on the border in need, Rancho Feliz carefully vets every partner before providing any in-kind support, ensuring that the individuals they serve are ethical, responsible, and committed to humane, no-kill care.

The team, along with volunteers, works together to keep the dog shelter and clinic clean and sanitized, build dog houses to keep dogs sheltered, safe from the elements and predators, and provide a sense of home and security. They also provide full-service veterinary care and wellness prevention for all dogs. This includes spaying and neutering to prevent hundreds of future strays, as well as nutrition and daily care, first aid, vaccinations, and ongoing medical needs.

But they can’t do it alone. They need help. Donations fund veterinary care, purchase supplies for dog houses, and support clinic operations.

“None of this would be possible without your help,” says Monica Gray. “Each year, the need continues to grow. We receive regular requests from neighboring towns and compassionate individuals who want to help Mexico Mutts suffer less in their own communities. In many cases, a single intervention is the difference between ongoing suffering and a chance at life.“

Rancho Feliz shares a beautiful video feed of many of the Mexico Mutts, the shelter, and the people who care for them every day. They also break down the numbers, detailing the need and how every dollar counts.

“With your continued support, we can respond to these calls for help and ensure that more animals are rescued in time. Your generosity ensures that every rescued dog experiences care, safety, and love.

If you can help, donate to Mexico Mutts, and please share their story.
