Little Nisha insists on a big tree, but her parents remind her that they live in a small apartment. That doesn’t deter Nisha from believing in the impossible—”a tree as big as a camel and as wide as an elephant.” Still, her Baba stresses they need a reasonably sized tree to drag home and carry up the stairs. So, Nisha decides to bring her wagon. When they both find a tree they can agree on, Nisha doubts it’s big enough. But after they struggle to get it home and decorate it, Nisha’s convinced it’s just right!
This is a children’s picture book by co-authors Susan Lynn Meyer and Jaya Mehta, illustrated by Parvati Pillai. It’s an easy read and perfectly seasonable with a secular theme. I especially applaud the unique snapshot of a diverse family. Yes, it’s a Christmas tree, but it can be a book for all who uplift the holiday season by decorating one.
The book is also a great way to challenge a child to consider sizes. Discussing what a big or small tree is would be a fun conversation starter in a group reading. It opens the floor to discussing what holidays are celebrated and what traditions children share with their families. I can’t imagine a library or classroom without this book displayed and used throughout December.
