PULL: How Gravity Shapes Your Body, Steadies the Mind, and Guides Our Health
In this book, author and gastroenterologist, Brennan Spiegel, MD, presents in detail his discoveries about how much gravity weighs (pun intended) on the body, mind, and spirit. The idea originated from his theory that the way we function daily is contrary to it. While it has been a theory discussed for some time, Dr. Spiegel has committed to studying the relationship between the body and “pull.” From digestive and bone health to organ functioning and mental health, this book details how the body functions within the scope of gravity and how this element can be the root of disease and pain.
Evidently, this notion is not a new one. It has been a central consideration of medical professionals for centuries, thus inspiring Dr. Spiegel’s focus on developing wellness practices to improve our functioning in a gravity-based environment. To some extent, we all battle the force, but I was surprised to learn that many people are medically intolerant to this “pull.”
PULL is a fascinating book, addressing a topic we may have casually considered but not realized, such as gravity’s impact beyond normal aging. It can be the root cause of some serious problems, such as IBS, heart, bone, and back issues. Dr. Spiegel shares numerous case studies and how seemingly “incurable” issues improved when viewed from a “gravity intolerance” lens.
The approaches outlined here are not limited to battling illness. Instead, he focuses on prevention.
From strengthening the muscular-skeletal system to what we eat and how we walk, Dr. Spiegel presents in detail the “why” behind these age-old directives. Of course, we all know that exercise and diet are integral, but how exactly does gravity enter into the formula, and what effect does it have on our microbiome—the collective microorganisms, both good and bad, making up our ecosystem?
Exploring five ways we manage our relationship with gravity, along with strategies for thriving under its influence, PULL is worth a read, especially for those who prioritize wellness. And for those who want to understand better the nuances involved in how our bodies function and how to maintain excellent health.
