Shadows of Tehran: Forged in Conflict: From Iranian Rebel to American Soldier
This book by Nick Berge is an autofiction novel, weaving fictional characters into a biographical story based on the author’s life. Eye-opening is the right word to describe the story of Ricardo, a young man who defies the odds and builds both a life and reputation as a freedom fighter. His journey to manhood is fraught with tragedy, conflict, opportunity, and hope, making this book an entertaining yet educational page-turner.
Many children are raised by parents from different countries, religions, cultures, and ideologies. Stepping into Ricardo’s story, you are instantly plunged headfirst into the emotional chaos a child faces when trying to navigate the tug-of-war played out in the home.
While many families find a peaceful navigation, for Ricardo, like the author, it wasn’t as easy.
When his American father abandons the family, Ricardo’s mother eventually remarries. This, during a human rights revolution, catapults his family into upheaval, only deepening the uncertainty and scars Ricardo must bear. But he’s resilient and determined to claw his way out of turmoil. When he becomes an adult and builds a family of his own, despite his success as a military leader, he continues to face battles within his home, his country, and his mind.
Although there were a few abrupt twists and turns in the plot and dialogue, I enjoyed this book.
There is more narration than dialogue, and that style is unique for some readers. As I said before, it truly opens your heart to this man’s story and the challenges faced by his people and culture. The book is long, almost four hundred pages, but it is worth reading.
