Sparrow’s Easter Garden
This children’s picture book by Roger Hutchison, illustrated by Ag Jatkowska, is a lovely introduction to the season of Lent.
As Sparrow discovers, everything has a season. As he trots out in anticipation of sharing his beautiful garden with his friends, he discovers it is a mess. The winter has crushed his plants; many have gone to seed, and the entire area is in disarray. His friend, Mousie, encourages Sparrow to embrace the forty days leading to Easter by working alongside him to get it ready for the holiday. Together, they and a few friends prove that with effort and vigilance, the dark will give way to light and beauty.
I loved this book and found it a perfect reminder of how the season should be embraced. Children and adults will delight in the lovely illustrations and the simple message, which needs very little embellishment. I think it’s a great way to teach and celebrate the journey from Lent to Easter!
