The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t

A very clever children’s picture book, written by Laura Alary and illustrated by Ana Eguaras. It’s a story based on the author’s own experiences and the memories her children carry with them from that event. It’s a perfect way to remind us of all our blessings and the true meaning of Christmas.

Aidan uses his advent calendar to count down the days until Christmas, but when a winter storm arrives, it shuts down all the power, and Aidan’s holiday traditions, and hope for the season come to a screeching halt. Then his father has an idea, if they can help others, they’ll soon forget their misfortune. This brightens everyone’s spirits until Christmas Eve arrives, and there is still no power. This time, his mother has an idea. She shares the biblical story of Jesus’ birth, when there was no electricity either. This reminder of the reason for the season brightens their holiday and brings sparkle back to Aidan on Christmas Day.

“As Aidan discovers, in the dark or in the light, God is here. This is Christmas.”

Although it’s designed for children, people of all ages will appreciate the story. And it comes with a special bonus. The author included activities and recipes for “Celebrating Christmas in the Dark” at the end, so be sure to read those as well.

I highly recommend including The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t in your family library.
