The “Right” Way to Respond to a Revise and Resubmit Letter 

When you receive a revise-and-resubmit (R&R) letter from a literary agent, this means you’re on the right track. They are interested in your manuscript, and responding “right” might result in agency representation. It’s important to know that a Revise and Resubmit Letter is not a formal offer of representation. Nor does it mean the publisher will take on your manuscript. Rather, it’s a letter celebrating that they really like your manuscript, but it needs more work.

Here are a few tips for “responding right” to the Revise and Resubmit Letter: 

• Reply: Let them know when you plan to revise and resubmit. 
• Revise: Get to work editing and polishing your manuscript.
• Respond: Send the manuscript back to the agent.
• Respect: The agent may accept or decline, but please respect this decision.
• Rejoice: If it’s a “yes,” the agent will let you know the next steps. 
• Remember: This is not a guarantee your book will get published.

If you respond “right” and the agent sees potential, you’re well on your way to becoming a bestselling author.
