The Super Aging Workbook: How to Get Older Without Getting Old…In Just Minutes a Day
This book by David Cravit and Larry Wolf is a companion to their book SuperAging, but can also stand alone. I love how they simplify the application of their message and techniques by introducing all that is needed gain the benefits is will and a pencil. The authors also streamline learning and application of their method with the seven A’s of SuperAging—the crux of the book.
Each chapter focuses on one of these pillars and with the first dedicated to their introduction and interconnectivity. They authors include reflection questions and space for responses, examples of healthy agers, and several quizzes and assessments for your ranking on the seven pillars. These are followed up with wellness practices, tools, and resources to improve your status.
They quote a plethora of research as proof of life that their easy to apply seven-pillar methodology works. For example, they stress how attitude is key.
“Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine found optimistic people can live up to 15% longer than pessimistic people.”
Maintaining a positive outlook toward aging including the benefits of shedding the “burdens of the past” and moving onto a new stage of liberation, independence, and opportunity. According to the authors, role models are important. Being motivated by people in your life or you admire from afar not only serves as guidance for aging optimally, but how attitude is the fundamental step for aligning all pillars to work in your favor.
I like the idea of a workbook.
There are pages and pages of prompts and tools for organizing thoughts and takeaways that you will reference time and time again. While this book is targeted toward Gen Xer’s, Baby Boomers, and the Silent Generation, I can’t imagine why this couldn’t serve as an outline for an intergenerational family discussion.
All pillars are relevant at any age, and if you start early enough adopting these key practices, just imagine how much longer you may live and how much better your life will be.
