The Whole Truth

The Hidden Agendas Behind Decades of Health Misinformation—and What to Do About It

Recently, I second-guessed my choice to move from vegetarian to vegan—until I read The Whole Truth by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and Nelson Campbell. Thanks to their research and reason in this eye-opening read, I’m glad I decided to stay the course.

But as the title states, it’s not about veganism per se; it’s about the whole truth—exposing the sometimes-dismissed and often-hidden science behind what we consume. Sharing what can nourish and heal, and yes, exposing what can slowly kill us is the mission here. It’s a book born of science and policy, challenging the reader to reconsider who, what, and where to turn to for nutritional facts.

We have a problem. According to the Commonwealth Fund, “Americans die the youngest and live the sickest lives, despite the U.S. spending the most on healthcare.”

If this quote isn’t motivation enough for you to read this book, then know this. Dr. Campbell has dedicated sixty years of his life to battling the Goliath of partisan politics and organizations blinded by financial agendas to bring to light the aggregate of nutritional science.

The first third of the book is dedicated to Dr. Campbell’s story, how he went from farm to academia and onto influencing public policy. His journey is thoughtfully interspersed with research that aligns with the goal of this book and subsequently shaped his career trajectory. His son picks up the baton in the third section, continuing the story of this duo’s impact on the scientific community and regulatory transformation. He’s created a collective of resources, including the hit documentary PlantPure Nation, that lay the foundation for ongoing education and lasting change.

There are many books and articles on the benefits of a plant-based diet; this book is different.

I’ve taken copious notes and tabbed pages throughout—which I’m returning to time and again for clarity and guidance. In this reader’s opinion, it’s a compilation of a biography, a scholarly publication, an illuminating guide, and an exposé of corporate and regulatory malfeasance.

The Whole Truth not only challenges everything you think you know about nutrition, but it’s also a real game-changer. Or should I say, life-changer? In essence, a book I wish I had access to back in high school.
