Two-List Thanksgiving
The reader follows along with a little girl helping her mother prepare Thanksgiving dinner for a blended family. When the American and Korean traditions mix, they’ve become the perfect tradition on which she is most thankful.
This is a delightful children’s picture book written by Christine Whan and illustrated by Sienna Youngsun Kim.
It gives a glimpse into what is becoming the norm—a blending of heritages over the holidays and in many cases, daily. Alone, it’s a fun read-aloud for ramping up the excitement and anticipation of the holiday season. But what I find so special is the author’s detailing of how the cultures blend through the ingredients of the dishes and the meals they share. It’s not limited to the food; the traditions of sharing tea, gratitude affirmations, and, of course, watching football, round out the ideal Thanksgiving Day.
I love how the author includes both traditional American Thanksgiving recipes and traditional Korean recipes, while introducing some Korean words—a perfect read-aloud for children at home, in schools, and during Storytime.
