When She Dreams: Book Six in the Burning Cove Series
If you’re a fan of Amanda Quick, then you know she lives to weave paranormal, mysticism, and the occult into many of her historical romantic mysteries. The Burning Cove series is no exception.
I jumped in toward the end with When She Dreams, but that didn’t detract from the book. Each installment introduces new protagonists, and this one has a saucy little amateur investigator, Maggie Lodge, a career-minded woman, and devoted assistant and friend to an advice columnist, Aunt Cornelia. Set in the early 1930’s this is a rare pedigree for any female, and Maggie’s determination to help her friend in need lands her in the office of private investigator, Sam Sage. Their work together to unmask the culprit behind the threatening letters to Aunt Cornelia leads them to a psychic dreaming conference. There, Maggie realizes her “gift” for vivid dreaming can work in her and Sam’s favor. Though they both struggle with keeping their own demons at bay, their needs complement one another pushing them beyond the professional line. Their mutual attraction becomes a distraction and leaves Maggie in the path of a dangerous killer.
It’s Amanda Quick, so of course, it’s a fun read and the glamorous seaside setting only adds to the allure.
She weaves magic, bringing two opposites—one rugged and down on his luck, the other sophisticated, poised, but headstrong and stubborn. Despite the classic “1930’s Hollywood” setting and somewhat archetypical personas, Maggie and Sam are relatable characters. Their fierce determination, Maggie’s bold honesty, and Sam’s rough-around-the edges nature make for a very appealing story arc.
