Why You Should Write a Guest Post

Just about every writer and freelancer has written a guest post or two. Authors are also adding this exercise to their repertoire. The reasons for guest posting are numerous, starting with building a fan base, pursuing a stretch project, gaining new followers, marketing a book, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), sharing opinions, thoughts, insights, and expertise, and, yes, another opportunity to do something they love—write!

Guest posting should be strategic.

Whether you’re a professional writer or doing a little crafting as a side hustle or for fun, there’s an art to doing it well. Why? Your reputation and brand will be forever attached to what you share. Trust me, I know. Therefore, when you’re ready to put your words online, keep in mind they will be there forever. That doesn’t mean you can’t revise and grow in your voice, tone, contributions, and expertise. However, if you plan to post your opinion and then contradict it with another post, your readers will become frustrated, confused, and lose interest. ‘Pick a lane,’ as they say. In other words, figure out in advance where you stand and what’s your brand. When you have that nailed down, then you’re ready to roll.

Guest posting should be a fun exercise.

While there are guidelines to follow (from the host or media platform), they should welcome the opportunity to embrace writers. So, vet your platform well. Of course, Books Uplift is an excellent resource for experimenting with guest posting and welcomes new voices and contributions on a regular basis. To learn more about why you should guest post and how to get started, read “Three Reasons Why You Should Write a Guest Post.”
