Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength
This is a best-selling success read for a reason. Authors Roy F. Baumeister and John Tierney have created a book rich with research, history, science, case studies, tools, and resources for understanding willpower and learning to tap into this invaluable and coveted virtue of self-control.
They start with the origins of understanding “willpower” and how it has collectively declined over the years.
Think about it. Humans have instantaneous access to whatever we want and won’t settle for waiting. So, yeah, will power drain. But that leads to unregulated emotions and thoughts, heightened anxiety, and depression, especially when things don’t go our way. Of course, the increasingly constant comparison to those who “have it made”—overnight success stories, perfect complexions, fit bodies, lovingly well-behaved families, perfect homes, and flashy cars—sucks the energy and enthusiasm right out of you. Along with this, the will to work hard and the patience to wait dissolve.
Then, the book transitions to performance, sharing stories of individuals who’ve endlessly circled success only to discover their untapped potential and realize their dreams through will.
It’s fraught with a history of hallmarks and humble willpower testimonials. Coupled with research, the lessons are laid out neatly for instructional purposes and motivational inspiration. One fascinating tidbit was the connection between self-esteem and willpower—surprise! This isn’t necessarily a parallel. While the sacrality of self-control and longevity may seem obvious, it’s eye-opening what belies them both—including the best use of intellect.
Cryptic? Maybe.
However, the authors explain these (and more) fascinating correlations, further encouraging building the willpower habit. I can’t imagine anyone not including this book on their reading list. For all who want a better life now and in the future, mastering the habit of willpower is key. This book is your instruction manual.
