Women Waking Up: The Midlife Manifesto for Passion, Purpose, and Play
Author Wendy Valentine has published a narrative about how to take back one’s life and find renewed purpose midlife. It sounds a little intriguing, almost as if it provides the steps to reclaim a path, but it is more like a memoir-style guidebook.
What I especially enjoyed about this book is how she shares her experiences with the full spectrum of challenges women face in midlife and the struggles that ensue.
Finding yourself amidst this massive transformation, reclaiming an old or new identity, adopting self-grace, and working to let go of your past hurts and mistakes. The latter part that seems so essential these days for everyone—letting go of the guilt, clearing out the clutter, and moving towards a dream. A lot of books promise the same result; however, this one demonstrates how, through her manifesto, rather than a how-to self-help guide.
The one thing I wasn’t crazy about was the general suggestions you find in just about every book. You know, the Wheel of Life and where you rank yourself now, where you want to be, how you want to change that, etc. There’s an expected piece on meditation, how to find a community, and so on. So many books today hit that same storyline, probably because there is such a massive market for it.
While this particular book is unique in targeting midlife women, I found her story the most engaging takeaway, and what makes Women Waking Up distinctive.
Again, I go back to the idea that this is better positioned as a memoir than a self-help book. But that’s only my opinion. However, maybe this is the teacher who comes at the right time with the right message that inspires you to apply them.
Back to her story.
I thought it was incredibly liberating and bold to leave what wasn’t working, basically, her entire life behind, buckle into an RV, and then take off for whatever lies ahead. That type of courage is really empowering, and readers will enjoy the combination of her adventure and the lessons she learns as she travels across the country.
Wendy, like many other authors, is a speaker, a professional life coach, and a podcaster. Still, everyone’s story is unique, and Wendy’s is unusual, drawing you in and uplifting you. I think her motivating tale will be the impetus for anyone seeking the courage to transform their life.
