Writing From the Heart Won’t Sell Books, But Strategy Will

Guest Post By Bestselling Author C.B. Wilson

When I wrote my first cozy dog mystery, I followed the classic advice every new writer hears: “Write what’s in your heart.”

So, I did. Cavaliered to Death was a tribute to my father’s beloved dog, and my second book followed the same path. The stories were authentic and heartfelt, but sales were underwhelming. By book three, I faced a crossroads: either rethink my approach or accept that my series wasn’t going to reach as many readers as I’d hoped.

That’s when luck kicked me in the right direction. Instead of choosing a dog breed based on personal experience, I chose one that fit the story’s plot and had broad market appeal: the German Shepherd. It’s the third most popular breed in America. Suddenly, sales spiked. My writing hadn’t magically improved overnight—my judgment had. The algorithm noticed, German Shepherd owners noticed, and my readership expanded.

Here’s what I learned:

1. Write With Intention. Every character, setting, and storyline is an opportunity. Ask yourself not just “What do I love?” but “What will my audience love—and search for?”

2. Follow Current Trends. Look at bestseller lists, popularity rankings (like the AKC’s top breeds), and reader forums. Aligning your story with what’s in demand makes it a strategic approach.

3. Think Beyond the Page. Your story components can create co-branding opportunities. Does your sleuth drink coffee? Approach a local roaster about partnering. Do you know if your setting has a craft brewery? Pitch them on hosting your launch party. Strategic tie-ins expand your reach far beyond Amazon’s algorithm.

4. Success Leaves Clues. When in doubt, follow the data trail. The breeds, hobbies, or settings your readers already love will give insight into where to take your next story.

So, what breed did I choose after the German Shepherd? Let’s say if you take a look at the AKC’s top 10 list, you’ll find the answer.

Because while passion fuels your writing, it’s strategy that fuels your sales.
