It Ends with Us

It Ends with Us

Does the world really need another review of this bestselling book by Colleen Hoover? Thats a big no. Nor do you need me to tell you that this story, which is now a blockbuster movie with megastars, is a smoothly written story that while boasting tried and true tropes—second chances, love triangle—is an engrossing read for all humanity. Why? Because what lies beneath is a darker thread demanding awareness.

Still, Im going to add a few thoughts…

Each character—and there are five with three protagonists—has a gritty, compelling, and identifiable backstory. I say this because honestly who doesnt have past baggage, fragmented family dynamics, and regrets weighing one down? We all do. Thats what makes each of them pivotal pieces integral to this carefully crafted story puzzle.

The plot brings together two people who see in each other what they desire—light and love. Lily is drawn to the successful, sexy surgeon, Ryle who represents stability, desire, and a future. Whereas Ryle, fighting to save lives while battling inner demons, is drawn to Lilys light. Shes a young beauty, whose raw honesty and unexpected quirkiness fills a void in his life. But hes averse to relationships casting doubt in Lilys mind about his stubborn stance.

Pain-filled memories drive them both to succeed in their chosen professions but despite their fierce independence, the attraction between them is impossible to deny. The embers quickly heat up but so does the friction. The result—a tumultuous relationship that ends in brutality and heartbreak. Until Lilys past catches up with her and suddenly a door is opened.

This is a book addressing the cycle of violence in relationships. Though its a great read, I think the best part of this book is the authors note about how she was inspired by her own mothers story. Its sad to consider, but the reality is, roughly one in four women have experienced physical violence from their partner. Though the subject is carefully peppered into the plot (not all consuming) it opens the readers eyes the subtle signs, swift progression, and the cyclical nature of this crime.

While I wanted to take a different spin on my review, I dont want to dampen anyones enthusiasm about this read. There are many uplifting elements of this book from beginning to close, and plenty of humor and happiness. The writing is smooth and seamless, making it easy to see why its a bestseller and a must-read.
