Gracie Reed decides to organize her life with an app that will keep her focused and on the path of becoming a total boss. It isn’t working. She’s got a sexual predator for a boss, is struggling to find a new job, and fretting about how she’s going to afford the care facility where her mother resides. Talk about kicking a girl when she’s down, her love life has tanked, her mother is growing more distant by the day, and weirdly enough, random paparazzi snap her picture as she frequents her favorite café. So much for her plan.
Then something unbelievable happens. Gracie is approached by the Chinese Starlet Wei Fangli and offered a job. The actress is desperate for time off and wants Gracie to be her stand-in. Now, it all makes sense. The photographers saw it too—she’s Fangli’s doppelgänger. Desperate for an out from her stalled situation, coupled with the promise of time with the actress’s leading man, Sam Yao, Gracie accepts. More importantly, she’ll have the finances to secure her mom a better future.
Not long into the agreement both women’s lives are turned upside down. Not wanting to spoil the story I’ll hint with these words: fascinating, eye-opening, humbling, and yes, swoon worthy.
I loved this story. It’s not only a fun read by best-selling author Lily Chu, but it’s a love story too. A love story of the Chinese culture, which is neatly threaded into the plot, of Chu’s talent for comedic romances, and of a love story as well. I’m super impressed by the ease in which Chu draws in the reader then unravels and neatly blends a seemingly complex myriad of backstories and multiple character arcs. It’s got length but it doesn’t deter from the fun. Rather, it’s a light-hearted rom com with a fascinating sub-line that educates and entertains.
