Dineen Miller is an award-winning graphic designer and book cover artist. She’s worked in graphic design and advertising for over thirty-five years and the publishing industry for close to twenty of those. Her favorite projects are the ones that challenge her to learn new skills and refine her existing ones. Meet Dineen…
What is your book craft? I design book covers and interiors for both fiction and nonfiction that align with the author’s branding and marketing plans. I can even help them develop this as well with logo development, marketing imagery, and whatever else they need.
How did you get started offering these professional services? I studied graphic design and advertising in college and worked in various industries as a graphic designer and art director for years. But in 2004, I started pursuing my writing career seriously and wound up offering my services to other authors to help out. That led to a dual career of designing and writing books.
What fulfills you most about working with your clients? Getting the response that they love their cover. As authors, we want our covers to represent our story, but the job of a cover is to grab a potential buyer’s attention, not tell the story. But when I can create a cover that will meet the market demands and makes the author happy—that’s a great place to land.
What is the ROI that your clients can look forward to by working with you? Professional care and quality. I’m professionally trained and have worked in the publishing industry since 2005. And as an author, I also understand the mechanics of creating books and what that entails in the big picture. I enjoy working closely with my clients to design the cover they want that will also serve them well. And I enjoy helping them think outside of the box.
What makes you, and your services, unique? I’m not just a graphic designer/book cover artist. I’m an author, as well, so I understand what authors need to get their books out there. The services I provide are custom and specific to my clients needs and desires so that their goals are better met.
What is one of your most memorable client engagements? Years back I worked on a series of covers for a client that started with a dream. I guess the creative side of my brain kept working overnight. LOL! Anyway, I woke up with the idea of making her romance books covers look like movie posters. That’s still one of my favorite cover designs to this day.
How do you hold yourself accountable and achieve the goals that you set forth? I’m a very organized person. That’s a big part of it for me. I’m also quite driven and goal oriented. And no matter what I’m working on, my goal is to always do my very best.
How do you help your clients do the same? I’m an encourager by nature, and I love to listen and tune in to what my clients are working toward. So I try to make things organized and easy for them. I have a lot of technical knowledge that comes in handy more often than you’d think. So, if an author is unclear about how to do certain things, I’m happy to help them with that as well.
How can people get started working with you? My email is dineen@dineenmiller.com. Just shoot me an email and let me know what you’re looking for. I’m happy to provide a quote, too.
