Lately, I’ve been on a legal thriller reading streak, so it’s no surprise I’ve included J.J. Miller on my must-read author list. I Swear to Tell is the first of the series featuring protagonist Candace Elliott, a newly minted lawyer at a prestigious D.C. law firm. She’s proven herself both at law school and as a prodigy in her short time at the firm, enough to impress the firm co-founder, Jackie Hardwick.

But while Candace is on the fast track of success and about to embark on a controversial case she’s been handpicked for by her mentor, Jackie, Candace has a dark secret that haunts her. Determined to right the wrongs of her past and acquit her new client, Candace strives to win both battles while teetering on the threshold of a career-defining case.

My favorite quote from the book is when Candace is confronted by an aggressive, foul-mouthed hothead protestor claiming to be the voice of reason. She doesn’t flinch. Instead, she relies on her proven calm logic that helps her succeed in the courtroom and delivers an acute, witty, and cutting blow.

“You know, it never really occurred to me until now the appeal of holding a radical opinion. It’s easy. You don’t have to scrutinize the selective information you’re fed. All you do is chew, swallow, regurgitate, and repeat. Like a cow.”

Wow. That should give you a peak into this sassy character with a stellar resume and quest for justice. I vibe that Candace Elliot would be a lead on either Scandal or The Good Wife and would no doubt make a Shonda Rhymes series come to life. Do I smell a plug here? Yes, you’ve guessed it, J.J. Miller has found himself a devoted reader and I would surmise in you too, dear reader.
