Book Craft Spotlight With Jen Braaksma

Book Craft Spotlight With Jen Braaksma

I met Jen by chance. Well, to be honest, I reached out to her directly as her site and services were so compelling that I needed to learn more. After a great conversation, I learned that not only is Jen a talented author and writing coach, but she is deeply interested in helping others. When you meet a person with that kind of passion for their work, you want to share their talents with the world.

What is your book craft? As a book coach, I’m your editor, project manager, expert, emotional support and passionate cheerleader. I help writers at any stage of their writing, whether it’s getting an idea for a book off the ground or finishing their manuscript. The benefits of working with a book coach include:

  • I keep you on track as you write—so you don’t get to the end and realize you went off the rails on page 2!
  • I help keep you accountable with deadlines.
  • I offer emotional support so when you get frustrated or discouraged, I’m there to encourage you.
  • You don’t have to go it alone. I’m invested in not just your story but also you as a writer.

How did you get started offering these professional services? I never really wanted to be a “do-it-yourself” writer—teaching myself the craft through books and seminars. I always wanted the help of a mentor, teacher or guide. When I stumbled on a book coach’s website, I knew immediately that one-on-one support was right for me. Working with my own coach, Jennie Nash, revolutionized the way I thought about story and the way I write. Jennie also offered book coach training. As a high school teacher, I thought the gig sounded like a perfect fit for my skillset and passions. Now I’m coaching and writing full time and haven’t looked back!

What fulfills you most about working with your clients? Connection, building relationships, helping them realize their writing goals, and marveling at their creativity and imagination.

What is the ROI that your clients can look forward to by working with you? The accomplishment of their writing goals—whether that’s a completed manuscript, a draft or an outline. I never guarantee publishing deals; my work is to support writers to get their vision onto the page in the best way they can.

What makes you and your services unique? I work one-on-one with each writer, so I customize my programs and support to what you most need.

Who is your ideal client? A writer at any stage of their writing who is willing to listen and learn, but who is also ready to stand up for their own vision. I offer suggestions and feedback but ultimately this is your story, so I work with your vision.

How do you hold yourself accountable and achieve the goals you set forth? While I’m disciplined, focused and have excellent time management skills, I also love my work. It’s easy to stay on track when you’re passionate about what you do.

How do you help your clients do the same? I work with their own strengths and goals. For example, one client may need more targeted deadlines to keep on track while another may benefit from additional encouragement. I work to understand their own writing journey and go from there.

What else would you like people to know about you? My superpower is empathy. I’m also a writer, so I know how hard writing can be. I benefited from personalized, expert support; I now want to offer that same service to other writers.
