Book Craft with Marika Flatt

If you’re an author and want to grow your book sales, you need to meet Marika Flatt, book publicist extraordinaire. After years of experience working as a book publicist for a literary firm, Marika and her husband, Doug, launched PR by the Book in 2002, capitalizing on her love of media & books.

Marika is a “connector” by nature, is a past president of Women Communicators of Austin, serves as an Expert for Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), is listed on Twitter’s Women in Publishing (#womeninpublishing) and has served on the selection committee for the Texas Book Festival. Marika also serves on the advisory board for the San Diego Writers Festival and on the committee for the Women’s Storybook Project, based in Austin. She was recently awarded the outstanding Austin communicator 2021 award!

What is your book craft? We’re a book publicity firm, based in Austin Texas, celebrating a little over 18 years in business.

How did you get started offering these professional services? I was hired as a book publicist straight out of college back in 1997. I stayed with that firm and handled the top tier clients, then left to start PR by the Book in 2002.

What fulfills you most about working with your clients? We are all about connection! We are passionate about connecting an author to the reader by way of media outlets. We know that all of the books that we work with have an audience and it’s up to us to make the connection between the author and their reader.

What is the ROI that your clients can look forward to by working with you? Our clients measure success through various ways. For most of them it’s actually not about book sales. For some, they are looking to build their brand in order to increase their social media following or find new clients for their business or some other ROI that they are seeking through media exposure.

What makes you, and your services, unique? We are definitely in the book niche but there are quite a few other book publicists out there. We all do the same things, but with us, you get honesty, transparency and great customer service.

Who is your ideal client? We love working with an author who already has an established brand, ideally with non-fiction books. The arena that we find ourselves in most often are health related books: physical, mental and spiritual health. But we handle most genres.

What is one of your most memorable client engagements? Several years ago, we were able to get one of our clients on Ellen. I was able to travel to LA and be there for the taping of the show.

How do you hold yourself accountable and achieve the goals that you set forth? It is very important to us that we deliver on media exposure. At the end of each month, we’re looking at the media results and I’m strategizing with each campaign manager on how we can continue to build momentum and obtain more media each month.

How can people get started working with you? They can go to our website  and request a free 30-minute discovery call. If we are a good fit, we will go from there. They can also check out our DIY option at www.authortoinfluencer.com.
