Bookstore Spotlight: Copper Dog Books

Bookstore Spotlight: Copper Dog Books

Purchased as Cabot Street Books by career booksellers Meg Wasmer and Julie Karaganis in 2019, Copper Dog Books has become a community pillar in Beverly, Massachusetts and the North Shore area.

In 2020, they expanded their brick-and-mortar storefront, a move that has helped them weather the ups and downs of the pandemic. Copper Dog has since earned an online reputation for carefully curated genre fiction, ranging from sci-fi and fantasy to horror and romance, as well as exciting virtual launch events and preorder campaigns, exclusive book boxes, and a virtual queer sci-fi/fantasy book club! This year, they have started in person book signings at their brick-and-mortar storefront as well as offsite events (farmers markets all over the North Shore, Pride festivals, books and brews at Gentile Brewing Company, books and barks in the park—yes, the authors bring their dogs!, and literary festivals).

Copper Dog focuses on antiracist, LGBTQIA2S, neurodivergent, and multicultural programming, and aims to boost and promote marginalized authors in genre fiction and beyond.

Their commitment to bringing multicultural books to the community and making books accessible to children is unlike any other. They work with Beverly Bootstraps and donate new books to kids in need every few months, and replenish Little Free Libraries with new titles, while also regularly donating to local mission driven charities in the area. (This is what I love the best about our store!)

Their customers have embraced this three-year-old bookstore in the best possible way, and they love seeing their queer romance displays get ransacked by customers.

Copper Dog’s biggest goal is to make all members of the community feel welcome and give them a space to find books that reflect their lived experience, whether it’s race, sexuality, gender, religion, or class. They also pride themselves on being a genre-friendly bookstore, where romance and sci-fi, horror, and fantasy fans can find the books they love!
