The Best Podcasts for Authors and Writers

The Best Podcasts for Authors and Writers

Authors and writers have historically been lifelong learners. We love reading, attending conferences, actively engaging in writers’ groups, and immersing ourselves in traditional and non-traditional training programs. But if you’re looking for something “newish” in the professional development arena that you can enjoy just about anywhere and anytime, look no further than podcasts. And boy, are they taking the world by storm.

Authors and writers host some; others are designed to appeal to the same audience: readers, journalists, publishers, agents, and the like. You would be hard-pressed not to find a podcast that interests you. And if you’re a writer or author wanting to bone up on your skill set and hone your talents, you should add a few to your playlist.

But where to begin?

Adding a few to your weekly rhythm won’t be a challenge, with the podcast industry growing by leaps and bounds. But be sure not to sacrifice that sacred writing time. I turn the mic over to my friends and industry experts to get the ideas flowing and sample a few new streams.

Check out some favorites and arguably the best podcasts for authors and writers.

“Podcasts are a compelling source of learning and inspiration for authors, sparking ideas and bringing to light meaningful life experiences through the power of voice.  By hosting nearly 200 episodes of my Market Impact Insights. I have been able to share the inspiring journeys and best practices of exceptional servant leaders around the world.  We talk about not just the successes but the failures, too, which were lessons to learn from and grow.   Our own personal life journey is an important part of being authentic as an author, but by listening to others, we expand our insights and resilience.  Commit to a schedule to consume podcast content, even if only 15-30 minutes every day or every other day.  Consistency is what is most important, as is engaging by providing the podcast host the ultimate gift of feedback through a rating/review with your thoughts on what’s working well and how they can make the podcast even better.” ~Dan Albaum, exceptional strategic marketing leader and author of The Impact Makers

“I enjoy the New York Times Book Review Podcast,” says Jordan McAuley, founder of ContactAnyCelebrity.com, a service that helps authors get book endorsements from celebrities, influencers, and public figures. “They interview best-selling authors who discuss their inspirations and writing styles. I always learn something applicable. I usually listen to podcasts in the shower and in the evening when I need to calm down before bed.”~  Jordan McAuley, founder of ContactAnyCelebrity.com and author of “Celebrity Leverage: Insider Secrets to Getting Celebrity Endorsements, Instant Credibility and Star-Powered Publicity.”

“Don’t miss The Self-Publishing with Dale Podcast. It’s the best way to stay current on self-publishing options and trends. Each week, there are episodes comparing the self-publishing platforms and tools that authors need to know about, along with shorter episodes on trends and updates in the industry. I’m also a fan of Stark Reflections on Writing and Publishing with Mark Leslie Lefebvre. The interviews from other (mostly fiction) authors are inspiring, and the author’s “reflections” are authentic and heartfelt. Both podcasts will empower and motivate listeners to continue their author journey. ~ Daniel Tortora, publishing coach, and nonfiction book editor.

I like Lynne Show because, as an artist herself, her podcasts delve into the artistic life as the main part of one’s creative world. Also, try Bonnie Marcus – Badass Women of any Age – is a terrific concept. She did interview me but did not guide me through the process, so I am sure it was a bad podcast, and it may never be “heard.” Finally, Allan Lycka sounds smart/witty, and the podcasts I heard were well-constructed and well-guided. Honestly, I only listen to the ones on which I might appear, trying to get a sense of the subject-matter direction the host is taking.” ~ Katherine MK Mitchell, bestselling author with the motto: “Through a tough life, a motivator is born.

“I host a podcast called Great Stories About Great Storytellers, where I share the interesting back stories of famous storytellers—authors, poets and directors. Each episode carries some interesting lessons learned from some of the successful and famous storytellers like John Grisham, Steven King, Mary Higgins Clark, and Gene Roddenberry. It’s not a podcast about the craft itself but one that authors at all levels would enjoy.” ~Dr. Randy Overbeck, Award-Winning Educator, Author, and Speaker.

“I’ll be featured on the Kobo Writing Life podcast later in October 2024, where we’ll discuss writing my new series Merely Mortal, worldbuilding, and everything in between. The hosts were very easy to work with, and the experience was a lot of fun. Podcasts like this are essential for authors—they dive deep into industry insights and inspire creativity. I listen to them while doing routine tasks, finding that they help me improve my craft by keeping me connected to the latest trends in publishing.” ~Michelle M. Pillow, NY Times Bestselling Author of Paranormal, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi Romance.

“I love to listen to How I Built This. It’s interviews with noteworthy entrepreneurs, and you see how many failures they had before they succeeded. It’s inspiring to hear how they persevere through colossal setbacks. I listen on my daily walk, and while cooking dinner.” ~ Loretta Breuning is the author of Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels.

“There are so many great podcasts out there that rather than name one or a few, I’m going to be contrarian and suggest you consider launching one yourself! Today, it’s easier than ever with DIY tools and free or low-cost hosAng services. My own podcast, Moving Forward, is a weekly platform where I highlight my work, including books I’ve written, insights into the writing process, and additional facts, tips, and trivia. Through it, I’ve also connected with fellow authors and inspiring individuals like Kimberly! Having a podcast is a very organic and budget- friendly markeAng channel that will allow readers and book lovers to discover you and your work.~ John Lim, author and host of Moving Forward podcast.
