Finding Clarity: How compassionate accountability builds vibrant relationships, thriving workplaces, and meaningful lives.

Finding Clarity by Marc Lesser explores how increasing self-awareness and interpersonal skills can help us live and lead with greater depth, compassion, and effectiveness.

Marc draws on decades of lived experience and practice to write this book.

His impressive resume includes serving as Director of Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, holding an MBA, and acting as CEO of three companies, including a leadership role at Google. He describes his life’s work as engaging with the transformative practices in this book and presenting them in accessible, actionable ways for the workplace and beyond. Marc’s compassionate awareness of readers—no matter where they are in life—makes him an ideal guide for personal transformation. Finding Clarity is both a foundational tool for growth and a supportive companion for navigating personal and professional pursuits.

Marc introduces the concept of “compassionate accountability,” seeing it as the key to unlocking clarity. He explains how these seemingly incongruent ideas—compassion and accountability—can work together, encouraging honest self-examination, building collaboration and trust, and inspiring transformative action.

Having read many self-help and mindful leadership books, I often seek fresh approaches to living a happier, more successful life.

Too often I find the same principles repeated, but not with Finding Clarity. As the saying goes, “when the student is ready, the teacher will come.” I came to this book at a moment when I truly needed clarity—struggling with unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that kept me stuck. Halfway through the introduction, I realized my deeply ingrained beliefs about challenges and conflict were increasing my anxiety and clouding my judgment.

I hadn’t even finished the first fifteen pages when I experienced an ah-ha moment.

I continued reading, studying, taking notes, and experimenting with the book’s models and tools, which have been incredibly helpful. But beyond the methods, it’s the mindset that stands out: letting go of unhelpful behaviors and attitudes requires courage. Marc explains that re-prioritizing what matters, exploring obstacles without judgment, managing expectations, and practicing new approaches is hard-won work. It’s okay to fail, to pause, to simply be. These gentle reminders and Marc’s wisdom make this book a must-read for anyone seeking a successful and more harmonious way of living.
